The Game of Pretend                  Jim Ryan, 2006

I can go on for days, not miss you at all
Not notice the phone fails to ring
Not missing your call
I can go on for nights, sleep without dreams
Not watching the clock creep until dawn
Least that’s how it seems

Til I see your old car, or drive by the park
Night get so dark and quiet
Security ends
Start to feel so alone, more like prison than home
Heart heavy like stone, weighed down
By the game of pretend

Oh the game of pretend, any number can play
You can dream it at night, you must play it by day
Oh the game of pretend, might help you get by
To say that you’re fine when you’re not
Is not the same as a lie

Get on with my life, hardly miss you at all
Get wrapped up in work, or play
Can’t do it all ... but I try to
Go out at night, home well before dawn
Get up and do it all again
With my best game face on

Oh the game of pretend, any number can play
You can dream it at night, you must play it by day
Oh the game of pretend, might help you get by
To say that you’re fine when you’re not
Is not the same as a lie
